Competition Corner – March 2018

We are moving into the heavy part of the homebrew competition season, so I hope your beers are ready.  There are a number of deadlines to keep track of.

First of all, the entry submission window for the National Homebrew Competition is now open.  You should have gotten an e-mail from NHC with shipping information to your judging center.  Eric Rosen has volunteered to drive down to San Diego, so if that is your entry site, you can drop off entries at the Culver City shop by 2:00 PM Sunday, March 25th.   If your site is NOT San Diego, you are responsible for shipping off your entries.   Shipped entries must be received by March 30th.  Two bottles are needed for the first round.  If your beer advances to the finals, you will need three more bottles.

Rapidly approaching is the Los Angeles Belgian Brew Challenge.  We still need entries, judges and stewards.  You can sign up to volunteer as well as enter by going to http://belgianbrewchallenge.com/  Michael has been working closely with artist Phil Reyes the last several days to finalize the tee shirt design.  It looks awesome.  Everyone who volunteers as a steward, judge or organizer gets a tee shirt. The winner of Best of Show will get his or her entry brewed by LA Ale Works and entered in the Great American Beer Festival Pro/Am competition!

Here are the key entry dates:
Now:  Registration open for entries, judges and stewards.
3/29: Deadline to drop off bottles at the sites
3/30: Bottle Pick-up
3/31: Organizing day at LA Ale Works 9:00 AM
4/8: Judging Day at LA Ale Works, 9:00 AM

Also in the queue is The Jeff Sanders Memorial Competition.  This is a small event run by Rives Borland and Strand Brewers with a selection of beer styles enjoyed by Jeff.  Registration open and runs through April 7th.  Details can be found at http://www.jeffsandersmemorial.com .  The competition is limited to 100 entries, so don’t delay.  Judges and stewards are needed for this event, so please sign up. Judging will be April 14th  at the Odd Fellows Lodge, Redondo Beach

Details are also out for the The 40th Annual Maltose Falcons Mayfaire Homebrew Competition.   Entry registration is now open and runs through April 13th.  The Best of Show winner will have their beer brewed by the Ladyface Ale Companie and entered in the Great American Beer Festival Pro/Am competition.  Again, we need judges and stewards. Judging will take place on Saturday April 28, 2018 9:00 AM at 94th Areo Squadron Restaurant in Van Nuys.

Entries for LABBC, Jeff Sanders and Mayfaire can all be dropped off at the Culver City Homebrew Supply Shop.  WITH THREE COMPETITIONS ALL AT ONCE, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR ENTRIES GO INTO THE CORRECT PILE!!

In addition to our upcoming deadlines, we now have results for our two early competitions.
First off, congratulation to Kingsley Toby for his first-place win for Second Sleep, Specialty Wood-Aged Beer in America’s Finest City competition.  Kingsley single-handedly prevented the competition from shutting out Pacific Gravity.   Thanks, Kingsley! Full results at http://quaff.org/AFC-2018/#

Next we have the California State Fair.  Parker Waechter and David Ashe picked up first place for Stoaked! English Brown Ale.  Parker also picked up a second place for his perennial winner Of the Clan McLeod, Scottish Wee Heavy.  And I picked up a 3rd place for my Dark Bock, Bede’s Bock. Looking forward, we have the Los Angeles County Fair competition in July, Pacific Brewers Cup in September, and the California State Homebrew Competition in October.
