May Club Meeting Recap!!

First off I wanted to Thank everyone again who brought their generous donations for our May club meeting charity drive. We collected a ton of stuff for our friends at OPCC.org and it showed with all the extra pink tickets people where given for the raffle because they donated. Which made the raffle more fun because people where yelling out pink or blue at every prize, wishing for there color to come up. We gave away a lot of great stuff that night too during the raffle because of it: hops and brew in a bag- bag, hop rhizome clipping and even a whole cap, shirts, beers, glasses, Firestone Walker glasses wear, and a few bundle pack of Wyeast and Firestone Walker swag, and a lot more.

Thank you to Michael Musgrave for stepping in and manning the grill he and Terry brought, cooking us a bunch of tasty burgers and large dogs with all the fixings chopped up by Dean and Terry. Ian I hope your recovering nicely!? Michael M. also bought our alternative fermentable commercial beers and Terry helped serve and present them.

We had Simon in from Phantom Carriage Brewery, doing the Barrel Project sours. Where a few of the PG homebrewers brought in sour beers and dregs to be added to wort Simon brought and will soon be added to a PG/PH barrel project soon!

We had some great educational stuff going on as well. Michael Patterson brought us two more off flavors to try: D.M.S. and Indole “BarnYard”. I personally finally had one I could not stomach with the indole off flavor, not the nice Brett barnyard flavors you would think. Michael P. also brought his own test of different added levels of grapefruit flavoring to beers, from low to high. Then, Greg Foster brought us another mind blowing triple triangle Brulosophy.com test to test on us! This time he did a 5 day traditional dry hop in wort vs. a long term hop in cold kegs of carbonated beer. The cold hop was surprisingly more aromatic.

We had more Homebrew then we could drink too! A bunch of kegs and some great examples of Alternative Fermentable Beers on hand. The Best Beer of the Night winner for the style of the month was our resident master brewer Carl and his Belgian Blond!!

We also inducted a few new roles to the Board: “Charity and Special Events” with the roll being filled by Mimi Bardet, and then “Educational Coordinator” with the roll being filled by Michael Patterson. I just wanted to thank you both for your contributions in both those roles so far this whole year.

Also a big thank you to Culver City Homebrew Supply for hosting the meeting at their shop, it looked like a bunch of club members where taking advantage of their extra club meeting member discount we implemented for this year. 10% off your purchase at the shop on club meeting nights hosted at the shop, instead of the usual 5% off.

Remember to go out and get your items for our May club meeting Charity Drive, which is tomorrow @ Culver City Homebrew Supply Store!  Located at: 4234 Sepulveda Blvd Culver City, CA 90230, where we will be serving us some classic BBQ (Burgers and Dogs) at the meeting tomorrow night cooked by Chef Ian.

So for Charity, run to Costco, Target, Ralphs, Vons, CVS, Wallgreens, Smart and Final, Ross Dress for Less, Fallas Discount Clothing store, or anywhere you think you can get a great deal on items individually or in bulk. Items like a large pack of sock, double packs of toothpaste and toothbrushes, or those large packs of Dove Soap Bars. Check out the list below, you are also welcome to clean out your closets like we did for the winter party Charity drive, and if you want to donate money Mimi will use it to go out and buy the need products on OPCC.net list of items they can use the most.

  • Sweat shirts and pants for adults – all sizes especially larger sizes
  • Sneakers – men’s & women’s most needed
  • Shower shoes/thongs
  • Rain ponchos for adults & children
  • New underwear – men’s, women and children
  • Flannel and long sleeve shirts for adults

Tolietries / Hygiene Items
Travel or regular sizes of the following:

  • toothpaste
    • toothbrush
    • deodorant
    • shampoo
    • disposable razors
    • bar soap
    • hand & body lotion

Also, remembers we are starting a “Pacific Gravity/Phantom Carriage Club Barrel Project” during this meeting as well. Here is the info below:

At this month’s meeting, Simon from Phantom Carriage will be bringing a few jars of sterile wort to inoculate with various wild yeast and bacteria from club members.  These inoculated jars will be used to create a Pacific Gravity “club barrel” of blonde/lambic-style beer at the brewery, which will be packaged at a later date.  
Homebrewed/house cultures are preferred, but all samples are welcome, so feel free to bring along commercial varieties of wild fermented beer to share and pitch bottle dregs.  Also feel free to bring yeast/bacterial slurries for pitching in addition to bottle dregs (they don’t have to be carbonated in a bottle).  We will vote on our favorite homebrewed contribution, which will win some Phantom Carriage swag!

So basically, bring your homebrewed bottles of sour beer, or collect in a bottle or jar some of your slurry and sour beer for tasting from a carboy, or bring your favorite live culture commercial sour beers to the meeting for sampling, judging, and sour dreg pitching. Then on a later date and time we will be throwing it into a barrel at the brewery!

Also bring your “Alternative Fermentable” homebrewed beers. April Meeting Reminder

Hey PG!

I hope you’ll be joining us this Thursday for the April club meeting at the Malloy residence, 6738 W. 87th Place, Westchester, CA 90045. If you’ve never been to an event at the Malloy’s, I highly recommend making the scene. They are exceptional hosts and it is a very fun location.

We have a lot planned for the evening…

We’ll be starting around 7:30pm and knocking out some quick club announcements shortly thereafter.

The awards ceremony for members who placed in the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Belgian Brew Challenge is up next, followed up fittingly with our style of the month commercial tasting of Belgian beers hosted by Scott S. This is a personal favorite style of the month of mine, it’s a great way to get acclimated with Belgian beers if you’re new to them.

Also, bring out your home brewed Belgians for the Best Beer of the Meeting competition. As usual, a $25 gift certificate to Culver City Home Brew Supply is up for grabs. I’m hoping that we’ll get to taste a lot of the LABBC entries and decide on our own PG best of show for the night. 🙂

Of course, we’ll raffle off some items and nosh on a few slices of pizza, this week we’re going with Tumby’s Pizza which is a good local favorite in Terry’s hood.

A few reminders:

  • If you loaned us a cooler for LABBC, they will be present and available for pickup. Kingsley has been nice enough to store them all month long so please, do him a favor and take yours home at the end of the night.
  • As we mentioned earlier this week, we’re in need of kegs of home brew for the Southern California Home Brew Fest next weekend (April 31st) so bring what you’re willing to donate. More info on that subject here.
  • Also on that topic, Treasurer Tim will be accepting payments for your SCHF campsite if you haven’t already squared up with him and there may be a few sites still available if you’d like to sign up at the last minute.

March Club Meeting Recap

Hey hey!

So who else had a REALLY good time at our club meeting last Thursday?!     In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap.

Michael Patterson brought out another round of off-flavor examples, one pitcher of “solventy” beer and another with “fruity” notes. The latter can be a good thing in certain styles but that solventy beer was something I hope to never taste again! Certainly not in my own home brew!     As an added albeit somewhat unexpected bonus, Michael also showcased an oxidized bottle of home brewed Imperial Stout from his cellar. Proof that even great brewers like Mr. Patterson make an off beer every now and then. 😀

Announcements were brief but informative; mostly centered around our 2nd Annual Los Angeles Belgian Brew Challenge, upcoming events and a few notes from yours-truly about some website updates that Webmaster Tad and I collaborated on recently. Speaking of which, how are you all liking the new First Friday Schedule under the Events tab on the homepage?  Useful or no?

Jeff Bystrom dragged in a heavy payload of Irish, Scottish and Stout beers for our commercial tasting and Parker earned the best beer of the meeting and a $25 gift certificate to CCHBS with his Red Carlin Irish Red Ale. Congrats Parker! With so many kegs lined up, it was easily our most fierce competition of the year so far.

Thanks very much to Michael Steinberg’s mentoring, I pulled off a gigantic batch of his club-famous corned beef and cabbage which Ian Fraser graciously pitched in and helped me to serve. Special thanks also goes out to Garrett and Bernadette Smith for picking up the loaves of rye bread and to Treasurer Tim for grabbing the deli mustard at the very last minute. Many thanks!

What else, what else…  Treasurer Tim manned the renewal booth and most everyone who attended renewed and received their 2016 sticker. I can’t stress enough how important those membership dues are to the club and on behalf of the board I thank you all for renewing with us year after year.

Terry Molloy, as usual, closed us out with a really fun raffle extravaganza and prizes were literally flying. We drank and ate very late into the evening and everyone made it home safely. A Reminder About tonights Meeting!

Tonights meeting is at the Culver City Homebrewing Supply shop: 4234 Sepulveda Blvd Culver City, CA 90230
On Club Meeting nights at the shop remember you get a double club discount, so come with your homebrewing shopping list!

Also a couple other things for tonight:

-We need “Coolers” for storing LABBC beers during the judging sessions. So if you have a cooler to volunteer for a few weeks, please bring it to the shop tonight and remember to write your name and contact info on it as well.

-It is membership dues month too, So please bring money to pay your dues for the year: $36 for single member ship and $54 for couples.

-Also bring money for the Raffle, and we also have more PG Glasswear for sale. (Sorry Lanyards are still on back order…)

February 18th, 2016 Club Meeting at Neil’s Complex

This months club meeting is going to be a special one. Last year we celebrated out 20th anniversary in February, so this year we are turning 21. Our club’s at the legal drinking age!! Neil is graciously hosting this months club meeting at his duplex in Marina Del Rey.  12966 Rubens Avenue, Los Angeles 90066

In Celebration of us turning 21, we have some special beers pouring for the night. First off the “Pacific Gravity and Firestone Walker Collaboration Wiezenbock” will be there, only 1 of the 2 kegs we got, recipe from Carl Townsend, this will be the non-barrel aged version. As well we will have the november chili cook off big brew Wiezenbock’s, brewed by Dan White and fermented out by Carl, Michael Musgrave, and Terry all will be pouring as well. So you can compare the differences from the Firestone brew and then three different fermented Wiezenbock’s from one big brew done with the same receipt, but fermented out by multiple people. So do not miss this meeting!! Also if your up in Paso Robles the “Pacific Gravity Homebrew Club Wiezenbock collaboration” is on draft at the Visitor Center!!

Other offerings at this months February 18th club meeting, we will have more Educational learning stations going on at the start of the meeting 7:30pm. Michael Patterson will be back with more Sensory Off Flavor Testing: Papery and Skunky. As well I hear Greg Foster will be back with more challenges and test for us to try too.

We will also be doing the raffle, the commercial tasting hosted by Tim Jones and “The Best Beer of the Night” for your chance to win a $25 gift certificate from the Culver City Homebrew Shop. This months homebrewed beer’s to enter are Amber, California Common, Reds, Brown, Mild, and Porter. (Note: I added Reds, so bring them if you got them!) and if you have any raffle items you would like to donate to the club please bring them by the meeting or email us at the board.

SIGN-UP’S!!!!!!! We will have sign-up sheets for all our up and coming events and you will be able to pay us at the club meeting too. Cash, Check, or Card.
-First sign-up for the Smog City Monsterbrew going on March 5th. It has been filling up fast!!
-Second sign-up for a camping spot to the “Souther California Homebrew Festival” this year April 29th-30th. Also don’t forget to pay for a SoCal Homebrew association member ship and entry into the festival as well at http://www.calhomebrewers.org. We will have 6 campsites that can hold only 36 campers, we have around half the spots signed up so far.

Also do not forget to check out the latest Competition Corner News for all the upcoming entries that are due in the next week to the start of next month. So get those entries in!!!

January Club Meeting Recap

It was great seeing all of you last night and I’m very thankful for those of you who brought out your kegs and bottles of homebrew. The combination of education, competition, and comradery exhibited last night was over the top. For those of you who weren’t able to make it out, here’s a recap.

The meeting started off with education, care of Michael Patterson and Greg Foster; a tradition we’re planning to continue beginning each meeting with moving forward.

Michael hosted a sensory perception demonstration on Diacetyl, the cause of the butter flavor that is by and large considered an off-flavor in most styles and Greg ran a Brülosphy exBEERiment that sought to investigate the differences between homemade and commercial Belgian candi sugar. Both were well executed, fun and informative. Many thanks to Michael and Greg.

Pizza was served, taps flowed and the board members reviewed current and upcoming events.

Lloyd led by announcing that my wife Tania Musgrave has volunteered to fill the open Secretary position on the Board.

Terry reminds all interested parties to contact soon if they plan to attend and camp at the SoCal Homebrew Festival, May 29th and 30th. Time is running out so act fast if you want to get involved, I’m told it’s an event that is not to be missed. General info here, email the Board for more info on our club specific plans.

Carl reviewed our competition calendar including our 2nd Annual Los Angeles Belgian Brew Challenge on March 26th and the Doug King Memorial Competition held tomorrow, Saturday January 23rd at MacLeod’s Brewing Company in Van Nuys. Take a look at his recent Competition Corner post for more info.

I announced my new role on the LABBC planning board as Sponsorship Coordinator and made a call for connections to breweries and businesses that might be interested in sponsoring the event. Sponsorship starts at just $50 dollars and tops out at $250. Email me for more info.

Also, First Friday for February is on the 5th at Three Weavers Brewing Company. For me, their Blood Junkie Imperial Red Ale, Kill The Lights Black Lager, and Amburana Wood Aged Porter are real highlights in their taproom and there is also a very good pizza place within walking distance which we’ll be ordering from. Getting there is easy too, just take Sepulveda south, take a left on Manchester and then another left on Isis.

Tim Jones announced proud news that Tomm Carroll will be teaching a class at UCLA focused on the business of craft beer. For those that don’t know him, Tomm is a local beer celebrity and columnist for Celebrator magazine and Beer Paper LA and he’s also one of us! Exciting news to say the least and as more details emerge I’m hopeful that Tim and/or Tomm will keep us posted.

Later on I held the commercial tasting bringing as many British Special Bitters and Commonwealth Ales to the table as I could find (they were surprisingly scarce) and Terry and Lloyd ran a really fun raffle in which most memorably Norm won a red bottle drying rack donated and later autographed by Simon Ford of Phantom Carriage fame; also a Pacific Gravity member.  I’m still laughing at that moment, photo included in the gallery below.

Finally, our Best Beer of the Meeting competition brought out a number of great brews and to my surprise and delight my Belgian Winter Ale earned the first win of the year! Thanks again to those who entered beers and to those who participated in judging.

In closing I want to say thank you again to those who brought homebrew, those who volunteered to host future commercial tastings, to CCHBS and Greg and Michael for their effort and time. I also want to welcome our newest members Josh, Pat and Nick.

I really hope you’re all in for a good year! Your new and continuing board members have a lot of great stuff in the works. To start off:

Beer Style of the month we will be splitting into two parts as of now.

  • One: the “Commercial Tasting Style” reflecting some of the new 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines. Where we taste Commercial beers of the monthly style.
  • Two: the “Best Beer of the Meeting” competition. Where like in the past if you bring beers to the style of the month, the club would vote on the best beer of the night and you would win a $25 gift certificate from the Culver City Homebrew Supply. The difference this year is that the “Best beer of the Meeting” reflects similar or even different styles to the “Commercial Tasting styles”. Just Check out the Style page on the website for the latest monthly style guidelines.

This month in January will be “All Beer Style” for the best beer of the meeting for your chance to win the $25 certificate. Bring any beer you have that you would love to share.
Note: kegs/growlers/and bottles are all welcome to enter, but it helps to have enough for everyone to share and taste.

Next, We are adding some educational aspects to the monthly meeting. Starting off Michael Patterson will be presenting an “Off Flavor Sensory Test” each month until all the samples are gone from the kit. He will demo 1-2 commonly unwanted off flavors found in beer.  Demo will be at the start of the meetings from 7:30-7:45 or later.  Come early and learn!

Yes there will be Raffle at the January meeting!! What will be raffled off…… probably mostly beers and goods purchased from the Culver City Homebrew Supply Shop. The more Tickets you Purchase the more we will raffle off!

As we work out the details of the year and all the new anticipated events, we need your help too!!! Please feel free to volunteer.
Check out the “Commercial Tasting Styles” of the months to come this year. We would love to give anyone the opportunity to have a budget to go buy some amazing commercial beer and Host them at our monthly meeting. This Month your VP Michael Musgrave will be purchasing Januarys styles of English Bitters and Commonwealth beers. Please follow his lead.
We always need Homebrew for the club meeting of course, but for up coming events, like So Cal homebrew festival, Parties, and other pouring events. So Get Brewing!
Finally if you do have any denotable gear, beer, good, or other brewing related stuff for our raffles please bring it to the club meeting or events, or email anyone one of your board members or all of them at [email protected]

  • Return of “Best Beer of the Meeting” comp, bring beer win $25 gift certificate
  • New Educational Demos at the beginning of the meetings, 7:30-7:45pm
  • Yes, there will be a Raffle!
  • We need Volunteers: for “Commercial Tasting Style” of the Month
  • We always need more Homebrewed Beer!!
  • We would love any Raffle Donations: Gear, Beer, Goods, or other Brewing related items.
