California State Fair Entries Due May 3rd

Online entry registration is due May 3rd for the California State Fair Homebrew Competition.  Entry information and registration is available at http://www.northerncalbrewers.com/homebrew-competition.

Thanks to Jeff Sanders and Ryan Penrod of Strand Brewers Homebrew club, you can drop off your physical entries at the South Bay Brewing Supply Co. on or before May 8th.   Jeff has graciously offered to drive the beers down to the San Diego drop-off point.   Please do NOT drop them at the Culver city shop.  There is no pick-up there and your beer could very well be consumed!

South Bay Brewing Co is at 1311 Post Avenue in Old Town Torrance.

If you happen to miss the local drop-off, you can ship you beers up to Sacramento by May 15th.

Good Luck!
Carl Townsend

Get Excited About Monkish and LABBC!

Pacific Gravity is thrilled to be just 1 day out from our inaugural Los Angeles Belgian Beer Challenge, that means in just 1 week, winners will be announced! This is super exciting because, as a ProAm competition, the Best of Show winner will have their beer brewed by our friends over at Monkish Brewing Company. DSC00873Monkish happens to be the best Los Angeles Belgian brewery around and if you haven’t visited the taproom, you need to make a trip!

Located at 20311 S. Western Ave., Torrance, CA 90501, the tasting room offers a wide variety of their Belgian brews on tap, as well as growlers and bottles to take home. As you sit in the brewery on bags of malt – sipping on delicious beers, nibbling on peanuts and pretzels, dreaming of what they have aging in the stacks of barrels, mingling with fellow beer lovers – you feel like you could stay for hours! And you should, because you need to try a little bit of everything – from spiced tripels to brett saisons, Belgian dubbels to hoppy DSC00907Belgian pales, brown farmhouse to strong dark ale, the list goes on!

The newest venture for the Monkish team was put in motion last summer with the arrival of their 5 foudres, which they will use on their journey into wild and sour beers. In addition to creating much anticipation for the results of these 1400 gallon experiments, the foudres have an aesthetic quality that stands out beautifully amongst the typical stainless steel fermenters.

Not only is the beer incredible and the environment inviting, the people are warm and welcoming. So get in there, say hi to brewmaster and owner, Henry and his team who are always more than happy to share their beers and show you around!

Competition Corner – January, 2015

Well, a new year is upon us as well as a fresh brewing competition season.   Each year, Pacific Gravity honors the brewer (or team) with the most homebrew competition wins. This year we are adding a new competition:   the First Annual Los Angeles Belgian Beer Challenge, with entries due at the end of February. Also, keep your sites on the Finest City homebrew competition, hosted by QUAFF with entries due in late January, and the American Homebrewers Association National Homebrew Competition with open registration from February 2-8.

Before our Brewer of the Year season opens, there are two local competitions you might want to enter: the Doug King Memorial competition hosted by the Maltose Falcons, and the 3rd Annual Romancing the Beer Competition, held by the Thousand Oaked Homebrewers. Both of these offer Pro-Am opportunities with various local breweries.

Doug King entries are due January 10th and can be dropped off at the Culver City or Eagle Rock brewshops. Details can be found at http://www.maltosefalcons.com/comps/2015DKM. They also need judges on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 9:00 AM at the Disabled American Veterans Hall 6543 Corbin Ave, Woodland Hills, CA 91367.

Club 20th Anniversary Brew – Recipe Submission forms

Great meeting last night everyone!

As promised attached to this post is the excel form for you to submit your recipe for the club anniversary brew!  Once you complete the form please email it to:

board [at] pacificgravity.com

Please submit your recipes no later than October 23rd – and remember that the style for our 20th Anniversary Brew is going to be a Belgian Dubbel.  To recap the idea – our club is turning 20 next February and we thought it would be awesome to get together at next month’s Club Meeting & Chili Cookoff to brew up a beer that would be worthy of our 20th anniversary.  The board decided on the style, but we need our club members to help us get creative and come up with an awesome recipe for a Belgian Dubbel.  Lets get creative and brew up an awesome beer together!

The board will go through the recipe’s submitted and post a poll for all of you to vote for the recipe we brew on Nov. 22nd.

Thanks & Cheers everyone!

Brian
