Mead Day Saturday August 6th

The first Saturday every August is the official AHA National Mead Day since it began in 2002.  So we will be celebrating on August 6th at the home of Dan & Anne Hakes by brewing, tasting and talking about mead.  For those of you who are new to mead making, we have some very experienced club members who will be happy to demonstrate and provide instructions on the process.

You of course are encouraged to brew your own batch or batches of mead as well! Please make sure to bring all of your own ingredients and supplies, though Dan has a water filter available so you do not need to bring your own water unless you choose to.

Some snacks will be provided and the Carriage House Taproom will be open.  If you have some mead to share, bring it along. Beer is welcome too as well as any other munchies.  Drop by, socialize, and watch how easy it is to make mead!

Location:  2379 W 21st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90018

323-203-5089

Calling all PGers and guests…we need VOLUNTEERS! The success of our party depends on YOU!

We need volunteers for party setup, party activities/duties (cooking & prep, check-in desk, serving beer, serving food, etc), and party clean up.

We encourage ALL members to get involved and to volunteer for at least ONE 1 hour shift but you are welcome to sign up for as many shifts as you would like.  Please let us know when you are available to help… we need people Friday evening (6-9pm), pre-party Saturday, LOTS of people during the party, and party clean up on Sunday morning at 10am til done. (Those in the “know” know that the volunteers have THE MOST fun at our PG parties!) As always this “must-not-be-missed” party is run by the volunteers…so please step up and volunteer to help make YOUR party a success!!  Please contact Mimi Bardet & Audrey Hill-Lindsay (activitiesdirector@pacficgravity.com) to volunteer.

FOOD!

Calling all foodies and home chefs! Please put on your aprons and whip up some dishes to share at our PG Summer Party. We are not only known for a party with great beers, but also known as a club with amazing food at our parties…thanks to our Club chefs and all YOU volunteer chefs and bakers out there. You are challenged to bring your favorite party dishes. We need LOTS of sides, salads, snacks/appetizers and desserts to round out the Mediterranean feast. Dishes complimenting the Mediterranean/Middle Eastern theme would be ideal…or even pick up some store bought sides at your local markets and restaurants on the way to the party!  Contact our PG Activities Directors, Mimi & Audrey, at activitiesdirector@pacificgravity.com with any food items that you are willing to contribute. We will be sending more details on food requests in future emails & posts.

BEER!

Please bring beer, beer and more beer to share! If you keg, please bring one or two or more! If you bottle, bring several! Meads, ciders, wines, sakes, and any other homemade fermented beverages are always welcome. Of course, non-alcoholic beverages in kegs and bottles are always welcome. We also need your jockey boxes for the party.

Drink Competitions this year:

We are keeping it simple this year with just 2 official competitions:

1-       Best Party Beer

2-       Best Non-Alcoholic Beverage

Prizes will be awarded to the winners!

And, please bring the single hop IPA club-collaboration brews from the May 28th Big Brew as well as any Tustin Monster Brews still on hand.

If you plan on bringing beer or soda kegs, please let us know by contacting Carl at CompetitionCoordinator@pacificgravity.com.

Kegs can be dropped off at the Culver City Home Brew Supply Store up until close of business on Thursday, July 14th – these will be delivered to the party by VOLUNTEERS with trucks on Friday evening. Note: Jockey Boxes can be dropped off at CCHBS on only Thursday, July 14th if you need them transported to the party. CCHBS doesn’t have storage space for multiple jockey boxes so it’s best if you get the jockey boxes delivered to the party on Friday night or Saturday morning.

Please note that Dean’s house will be OFF LIMITS for ALL party attendees…plenty of portable bathrooms will be available. (We are trying to arrange a nicer-than-basic one for the women.)

Dean has a swimming pool and welcomes his guests to use the pool. Kids MUST be supervised by adults at all times while in & around the pool. Please bring your own bathing suits, towels & sunscreen.

As always, there will be a Club Raffle and Door Prizes! Raffle tickets will be sold at the front gate prior to the raffle for just $1…such a bargain!

More information will be coming as final details get firmed up.

Just don’t forget to VOLUNTEER…we really need everyone to pitch in to make this another successful PG Summer party. Please contact Full-Time Board members for any questions, etc.

Club Meeting June 16th

This Thursday is the June Club meeting, featuring Lagers. As
always, the meeting will take place at Culver City Homebrew Supply, running
from 7:30-10pm.

I’ll be at the AHA Conference in San Diego, so will be
missing this month’s meeting. Veep Reed Wilson will be taking over for me and making
the announcements.  Our Activities Directors,
Audrey and Mimi will supply the snacks, and urge you to go on the Stuffed
Sandwich Road Trip, brew beer for the Summer Party, and volunteer to help out
at club events.

Fundraiser Terry Molloy will sell a lot of raffle tickets, I
hope, and give away some great prizes.

Don’t forget to bring beer to the meeting (favorite lager
wins a $25 gift certificate), even if it is not in the monthly style. If you’re
a new brewer, bring samples for our club experts and judges to taste and give
you feedback.  Most importantly, enjoy yourself.

May 19 Club Meeting

This Thursday we will all gather out back of Culver City Home Brew Supply to share American Ales (BJCP Category #10). Our tasting host will be newcomer to the job, Andy Caruso.

Snacks will be provided by Audrey and Mimi, our super duper Activities Directors.

Audrey has been busy making more beer leashes, so bring some extra cash or a check.

Leashes are $5, PG glasses, $6. $10 for both. What a bargain, and opportunity to support P.G. These items make perfect Birthday, Father’s Day, Christmas, or Wedding gifts.

We have  lowered the price of P.G. shirts. They are now $15, a bargain you shouldn’t pass up. Also, until we sell the current stock, we won’t be able to move on to our next shirt, with a different logo.

The meeting begins at 7:30, with announcements at 8, followed by the commercial tasting, and raffle at 9.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday.

SM Bus Pub Crawl – Saturday, May 21st

Please join us on Saturday afternoon, May 21, for a pub crawl led by Tom Rierson of five pubs in the Santa Monica/West LA area. We will visit a couple of favorites, a couple of ones that you know but probably haven’t been to recently and at least one that most members haven’t heard of. All have excellent beer lists.

Here are some more details on this fun, upcoming event:

The Santa Monica Bus Pub Crawl will start at Fathers Office I (1018 Montana Ave., SM).

We will meet there at 1 PM and leave there 2:20-2:30 PM to catch the bus to the next pub.

The planned order is:

Fathers Office I,

Broadway Alehouse (*),

Steingarten,

Daily Pint,

West 4th/Jane,

(*) However, Broadway Alehouse has been extremely irregular in its Saturday hours so we might have to make some adjustments as we go.

We will spend 30-45 minutes in each pub and end at the West 4th/Jane pub in downtown Santa Monica about 6-7 PM. West 4th/Jane has a kitchen so you can eat there if you wish.

A Santa Monica Day Pass ($4) is recommended but single tickets ($1) also work. The day passes and single tickets can be bought on the bus (cash only, no change given). You can also buy Day Passes in advance at the next club meeting (May 19).

You are welcome to join for the entire route or just join in for a pub or two!

We will have a signup sheet at the May 19 PG Club meeting.

Thanks to Tom Rierson for all his pre-event planning and research!

Looking forward to seeing you all on the SM BUS PUB CRAWL ON MAY 21st!

Cheers,

Mimi & Audrey

Spring Club Big Brew May 28th at Michael Steinberg’s House

This event will be a multi brewer Big Brew with room for about 8 brewers to brew at a time outdoors on Michael’s driveway. Those planning to brew should bring their equipment but water is available on site.  Reservations are a must if you intend to brew.  Anyone not planning in brewing, but interested in watching the process or just hanging out with fellow PG members are encouraged to come as well!

The event officially begins at 10am and ends when the last brewer is finished, which is usually around 6pm. As usual, anyone who would like to show up earlier is welcome to do so, since Michael will be up and brewing by 7am.

Food: We will be grilling up sausages, chicken and veggies but feel free to bring anything else you would like to toss on the grill.  Some snacks will be provided but more are always welcome.

Beer: As with any PG event the beer will be supplied by whoever shows up. Bring kegs, bottles, or growlers.  For the early comers breakfast beers are also encouraged!

Address: 10754 Barman Ave, Culver City, 90230. That’s across the street from Vet’s Park, between Overland and Coombs. Look for the massive RV in the street.  (310) 991-0824

Southern California Homebrew Festival – FINAL PUSH!

Well, kids – the Brewfest is next weekend, April 29th – May 1st. Thanks to all of you who’ve paid your camping fees and are ready to go.
There’s still time to sign up and camp out with PG and to join the CHA, but you need to act quickly – you can conveniently pay for your camping fees through the Paypal link on the PG website (see my previous post), or you can drop your fees off at Culver City Homebrewing Supply; if you opt for the latter, please shoot me an email at schbf@pacificgravity.com and let me know. Remember that to gain admission to the Brewfest, you must purchase your CHA membership in advance (no sales at the gate!), and the calhomebrewers.org website will shut down the advance sales on Friday the 29th at noon – so don’t delay!
Thanks again for your interest and support.

Special Raffle at April 21st PG Meeting!

Come one, come all to our “special” raffle at tomorrow’s Monthly Meeting. The Pacific Gravity Board of Directors has decided to donate ALL raffle proceeds to a worthy Japanese charity. Activities Director, Mimi Bardet, and Tomm Carroll have been contacting friends in Japan in order to find an appropriate charity. A final decision on which one we will send money to has not yet taken place, but rest assured, it will be one worthy of our efforts.

If you have any equipment, glasses, or beer you would care to donate to this (or any other) raffle, please bring it to the meeting. All donations are welcome.

Don’t forget to bring cash to the meeting so that you can purchase tickets from Terry Molloy, our Grand Fundraiser. Lets see if we can break a record, and send a nice fat check to relieve the suffering in Northeastern Japan.

Michael Steinberg,

President, Pacific Gravity
