Arts District Brewery Crawl Saturday, Sept 1

What do you do when First Friday has too  many options?  Push it to Saturday, of course!  Join us for a visit to several of the downtown area breweries.  It also give many of a us an opportunity to take public transit.

There are a lot of places to hit on this trip, so we may end up splitting up and going to different locations.  Here is an update with Ian’s proposed timeline:

Greetings All, I am posting on behalf of Carl Townsend our ‘cat herder’ and organizer of our Saturday Arts District Pub Crawl.

We wanted to post a schedule for the day so that any late arrivals would have an idea of where to find the group when they show up. Now these times are not written in concrete and as the day unfolds are flexible but the current plan looks like this:
Arts District Brewing from 12:00 Noon to about 1:30 PM or so.
Dry River Brewing from 1:45 to about 3:00 PM
Then cross the street to Indie Brewing from 3:00 PM to 4:15 PM
Then march to Iron Triangle Brewing from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Then back North to Mumford Brewing 6:15 PM to whenever
Then if you are super serious about hitting all the stops you can finish at Weiland Brewing or Boomtown Brewing both located right in the neighborhood!

Post any comments or questions in the comments section and we will get back to you!
See you on Saturday!
Ian

If you want an early start, I’d suggesting grabbing a bite to eat at Wurstkuche, 800 E. 3rd st @ Traction Los Angeles, CA 90013 .   This place has has a variety of German sausages and a good assortment of German and Belgians beers.  Wurstekuche opens at 11AM.

I’ll be starting the day at Arts District Brewing Company at 828 Traction Ave, 90013.  Doors open at noon.  The beers brewed by our own Devon Randall are always top-notch.  I’ll be grabbing a bit to eat here.  Right near by is Angel City Brewery, 216 S Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

From there, we have several directions we can go.  Due south of Arts District is Iron Triangle Brewing, 1581 Industrial St, Los Angeles, CA 90021.   To the east, across the 6th Street/Wittier bridge are a pair of breweries, Dry River Brewing, 671 S Anderson St, Los Angeles, CA 90023 and Indie Brewing Company, 2350 Sunrise St, Los Angeles, CA 90023.

At the north end of Arts District is Boomtown Brewery, 700 Jackson St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.  This is the closest brewery to Union Station Red and Purple lines, and the Gold line.

At the west end of the area is Mumford Brewery, 416 Boyd St, Los Angeles, CA 90013.

There are a number of different options to get to the Arts District by transit.  You can take the Expo line up to the 7th Street Metro center.  You can grab the Red line there for a one or two stops to save a bit of walking.  Fare is $1.75 each way.

I find the 733 bus that runs the entire length of Venice Blvd to be a simple option for many west-side starting points.  It turns north on Main street, and returns southbound on Spring Street.  Fare is $1.75 each way.  More info can be found at https://www.metro.net/riding/trip-planner/

For the shank & faucet option, advise how many shanks and how many faucets (e.g. if you want to purchase your own faucets).

Homebrewers Club In Need Of New Home

An era comes to an end: it’s been a great 20+ years, but our May meeting is the last one we will be holding at Culver City Homebrew Supply. Our June and July meeting places are already set (jockey box day and summer party, respectively), so we will need a meeting place for August.  If you know of a meeting place on the Westside that has room for 30-50 people and will allow us to share homebrew on-site, please drop a line to: board @ pacific gravity.com.

HAPPY BREWING!

First Friday at Smog City

February’s PG First Friday is almost here.  Please join us on Friday February 2 at Smog City Brewing.  We’ll get started at the usual 7pm, so come on down and see what Jon Porter & Co have on tap.  Smog City has long been a strong supporter of Pacific Gravity.  A visit to their taproom with the PG gang is a great way to return the favor.  Hope to see you there.

First Friday Tonight and Cal State Update

PG!  Super quick reminder: We’re meeting at Phantom Carriage Brewery ( 18525 S Main St, Carson, CA 90248 ) tonight starting at around 7:30p for October’s First Friday.  Their food menu is one of the best in it’s class and the beer on hand ranges from traditional European and American ales to a wide range of sour and wild ale options.

Also a quick note to our competition brewers. Unfortunately we were not able to find a volunteer to drive club member entries up to this year’s California State Homebrew Competition. If you are entering beers, get them shipped out as soon as possible. As much as we’d like to help, you are on your own!

See you tonight!

Michael

First Friday @ Maple Block Meat Company

Hey PG!

Quick note to those of you who are looking for info on tonight’s First Friday. It looks like some kind of technical difficulty is going on with the site, and the event mysteriously vanished from our calendar.

We are in fact meeting TONIGHT at Maple Block Meat Company here in Culver City, just up the street from the shop. I’ll be there (with no reservations) around 7pm and the plan is to snag a table and fill out the outside area if possible.

Maple Block is at 3973 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230 Hopefully I’ll see you there!

First Friday August: Firestone Walker’s Propagator

Hey PG,

Our Summer party on Saturday was a blast, wasn’t it? A well earned thanks goes out to Mimi for orchestrating, Dean for hosting, and to the team of volunteers who planned, prep’d food, brought beer & raffle prizes, and helped with setup & cleanup. Our special events and charity coordinator Mimi did her usual excellent job of laying out the plan, and everything went off without a hitch.

If you have photos from the event, I’d love to see them. There are about four ways to reach me, choose one or two. 🙂

Next up on our calendar is August’s First Friday this Friday August 4th. We are going out to Firestone Walker’s Propagator near Washington and Lincoln; not too far from the shop actually. Manager Jay is always good to us, and we have a great relationship with FW in general. I’m hoping for a decent turnout, on that note just a reminder too: First Friday’s are always open to friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Aiming to be there myself at around 7pm, but come by when you can.

Heads-up: Firestone Walker only fills FW branded growlers.

Looking further on into the month, I’m going to be cooking up some burgers at Culver City Home Brew Supply for our Third Thursday club meeting. Tim J. will supply the commercial tasting, style is Sour beer. I have a few bottles I’ll be bringing out for the Best Beer of Meeting competition, and I’m calling on our best sour beer makers to do the same. Yes, that was a challenge. The line is drawn in the sand, cross it if you dare! 😛

Alright, info on First Friday is below. Tim, I hope you’re already shopping for your Sour flight — I’ll gladly help you pick them if you’re having trouble deciding.

See you Friday @ 7pm PG!

Michael

Bus Party/Bus Trip to Stuffed Sandwich on Saturday, July 8th

Who’s going on Pacific Gravity’s road trip to Stuffed Sandwich on Saturday, July 8th?
Please let us know ASAP if you want a seat on the bus. And, please let us know if you will be going but not on the bus. We need to give Stuffed Sandwich an estimated headcount by the end of this week. Please email Mimi at mbardet@verizon.net at your earliest convenience this week.

Also, please note that Stuffed Sandwich has confirmed the lunch special as:
Half a sandwich (Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef, Italian Sub or veggie option) served with a side of potato or macaroni salad along with a pint of draft beer in a complimentary glass for $19.50 (a $25 value).  Note this is in ADDITION to your money for the bus ride. The sandwiches are huge, so this is a good lunch even for a big eater. We will collect orders for the special lunch as we board the bus on July 8th.
Please see the post for this trip on the PG website for more details.

Pacific Gravity’s Summer Party on Saturday, July 29th

A note from Chef Ian about our PG Summer Party on Saturday, July 29th:
SUMMER LUAU

WE ARE GOING ON A HUKILAU, A HUKI HUKI HUKI HUKI HUKILAU!  We are going to eat some ono kau kau!  At our huki huki huki huki hukilau!

Aloha and shaka bra!  This year’s summer party will feature a Hawaiian style luau theme.  This particular theme is near and dear to our chef’s heart and soul as he was a long time native of the islands.  So expect him to pull out all the stops and try to create as close to a traditional style luau as we can get without actually digging an imu (oven) pit in Deans yard!  So get out your grass skirt and palm frond hat on and hula on down to Dean Sussman’s little grass shack in the Pacific Palisades.  The address is 1310 Amalfi Drive.  The date for our luau will be July 29th.

As usual this is a huge operation and its success will depend on massive amounts of member assistance.  First off we need beer, lots of it; if you brew now you still have time to get it in the keg for the summer party.  We also need sodas for the non-drinkers, if you ever wanted to make a soda, now is a good time to try it.  This year’s drink contest will feature ‘tropical fruit’.  Any alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink or beer that features a tropical fruit will be considered for this award.  Plus we will award the best beer an honor as well.

We will need all party attendees to bring food dishes to compliment our Chef’s luau feast. So, please start thinking what you will bring.

And, time to clean out your closets! We will have collection of charity donations for The People Concern (formerly OPCC). Charity Donation Goods to be collected: – clothes, toiletries, new socks/underwear, kitchen kits, cleaning supplies, etc ( https://www.opcc.net/?nd=in )

Finally, we will need volunteers for all aspects of the party: setup-Friday & Saturday, food prep-Friday & Saturday, check-in, bartender shifts & cleanup-Sunday am.

So, please email us (board@pacificgravity.com ) if you have questions or just want to sign up to volunteer!

First Friday (July 7th) in Redondo Beach

And, don’t forget that we have First Friday (July 7th) in Redondo Beach: Naja’s Place & King Harbor Brewing Taproom. (see PG website/calendar for more details)
