First Friday – City Tavern

Join me on December 7th at City Tavern in Culver City for our First Friday event.  City Tavern has a pretty big tap list and they turn them fast so there is always something on offer that I have never heard of before.  They also have a nice menu of burgers, sandwiches, and entrees as well as small plates if you want to eat tapas style   I spoke to Matt, the general manager, last night and they are looking forward to our attendance.  Park in one of the many parking structures in downtown Culver City for free and walk over.  Official start time is 7 PM but I will be there as soon as I get off work.

Thanks for a successful holiday party!

I wanted to write a quick note to thank all of you who cooked food, brought beer, went shopping, setup, cleaned up, and generally behaved yourselves as guests at Dean’s house.  I’d like to especially thank the board and the volunteers who showed up early Saturday and Sunday to put in double duty.  And saving the best for last, a huge thank you to Dean for letting the hordes descend on his lovely home, and for the coffee, pancakes, and everything else.  Happy holidays to you and your family!

Holiday Party – Call for food and volunteers

Hi Pacific Graviteers!

Our annual holiday party is this Saturday and we need your help to make it a success!  The party is being graciously hosted by Dean Sussman (address below).  We will get started at 5 PM and are schedule to complete the festivities at 10.  Members in good standing are invited and may bring a guest.  We’re all adults, so use you judgement when inviting people.

Bring Food!

This is a potluck party, so we are depending on YOU to bring your favorite holiday dish to share.  Please know that there will be no cooking or prep area, so bring your offering ready to eat and hot (if appropriate) in a disposable container (every supermarket sells tons of different sized disposable aluminum pans).  If you must bring it in non-disposable dish, please be prepared to take that dish home with you at the end of the party.  We already have several volunteers to bring fried turkey, smoked pork, ham, and carbonade, but we need help rounding out our main courses.  Bring sides or holiday staples like stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, creamed corn, veggies, and salads.  Bring appetizers and finger food like shrimp, pig in a blanket, egg rolls, stuffed mushrooms.  Bring you family recipe or holiday traditions.  There will be no “service” but dinner should commence by 6:30.  Please email  [email protected] with the dish you would like to bring so I can make a label for your food.

Bring Yourself!

We need volunteers to help pull off a 150+ person party!  Out of respect for Dean and his family’s schedule we are trying to minimize the setup and take down duration and so setup must begin on Saturday at 11 AM.  If you can volunteer for setup duty, please email [email protected] and we will see you Saturday morning.  If you can’t be there to setup, please come to help with the cleanup.  We need to start cleanup at 9 AM on Sunday morning in order to be finished by noon.  Again, email [email protected] to volunteer.

Bring Stuff!

We are renting some things, but we need the membership to help with much needed equipment.  Please email [email protected] if you can bring any of the items listed below to the party:

  • Easy Ups (in case of inclimate weather)
  • Patio Heaters
  • Jockey Boxes
  • CO2 Tanks
  • serving tables

We already have things for the raffle, but if you have lightly used equipment, glassware, or other schwag to donate, please contact [email protected]

Bring Beer!

As I said yesterday, please have your kegs to the shop by 7 PM on Friday so that we can transport them to Dean’s and setup the Club Dispensing System.  Please email Carl at [email protected] with your beer’s name, style, ABV, and keg volume so that he can make labels. Feel free to bring home brew or special commercial beers in bottles to share with other guests as well.

Holiday Party December 1st – Call for Kegs

Hi members, I hope you are looking forward to our Holiday Party this Saturday, December 1st.  I’ll be sending out another announcement later with all of the details about how you can help make this party great. But for now, we need to know what home brewed beers you are bringing to the party.  Please email Carl at [email protected] with the name of your beer, beer style, ABV, and keg size so that he can make up a special holiday themed label.  Since we have a very limited time to setup for the party, please bring your kegs to the Culver City Home Brew Supply store on Friday by close of business.  If you absolutely can’t make it to the store on Friday, we can accept kegs during setup at the party, which starts at 11 AM.  As a last resort, bring your keg to the party once it is going at 5 PM.

Further questions?  Email Carl at [email protected]

Tomorrow, November 2nd, our First Friday event will be at Wurstkuche in Venice Beach.  If you have never been to their downtown or Venice location, this is the time to go.  They serve gourmet and specialty sausages,Belgian fires, rare and specialty sodas, and of course an excellent selection of Belgian and German beers.  There are plenty of public transportation options and bike parking, so leave the car at home and have an extra beverage.  The event officially starts at 7, but it’s casual so show up when you like.

Club Meeting Thursday Oct 18th

Join us for the monthly third Thursday club meeting at the Culver City Home Brewing Supply Company.  The festivities officially start at 7:30 PM.

Strong ales of any type are the style of the month, and we will be holding a Club-Only taste-off for Old Ale, BJCP style # 19C.  Bring three 12 oz bottle if you want to enter.  Kegs are still needed to keep the evening well lubricated.

Topping the agenda for the evening are nominations for the 2013 elected officers.  As of this writing, nominations include David Mauceli for President and Noelle Cross for Vice President.  We are actively looking for a nominee for Treasurer.   Additional nominees for all three positions are still open.  If you are interested in joining the board as either an elected or appointed officer in 2013, please contact any of the current officers.  We will be holding elections at the November meeting and will be finalizing the appointed offices in January.  Also this month, we will be holding nominations for Club Member of the Year.  This selection recognizes / honors significant contributions and involvement by club members.   The winner will be announced at the Holiday party.   All currently paid members eligible for nomination, except last year’s winner and perennial party host, Neil Saund.

Also available at the meeting will be the sign-up sheet for Big Brew/Jockey Box/Chili-cookoff day at Carl Townsend’s place this Saturday, Oct 20th.  Tubing is still available for jockey box builders, as is space for brewers and room for more chilis. The Wave of Beer will be making an appearance, so bring your kegs.

And don’t forget the usual festivities of the commercial tasting, raffle, and the jovial camaraderie of Pacific Gravity club members.

Hope to see you there

Competition Coordinator

Big Brew/Jockey Box Day/Chili Cook-off Saturday Oct 20th

Join us the Saturday, October 20th for the combined Jockey Box/Chili Cook-off and Big Brew Day, at Carl Townsend’s house.

We have a busy schedule of events, so come by early and spend the day.  First on the schedule is flame-on for the all-grain brewers.  We’ll get going around 10:00 AM.  Extract brewers can stop by a bit later.  We still have a bit more room for brewing, so if you want to bring your kettles come on by.  This is an excellent time to get your Holiday beer going, if you haven’t already brewed it.

Next up is the jockey box build.  See my Brewmaster article for all the details of this event.  We still have a bunch of tubing available, so if you are on the fence for this one, feel free to jump in.  We might run out of other supplies, but at least you can bend your tubing and make up a parts list, which you can pick up at the Culver City shop later on.  Remember to bring your cooler.

And, don’t forget the chili cook-off.  Read more

First Friday @ The Daily Pint

Hi Members-
Just a reminder that tomorrow is First Friday. We’ll be meeting at The Daily Pint in Santa Monica. For those who haven’t been, they are fantastic hosts and when I spoke with Phil (Owner) yesterday he assured me that we wouldn’t be disappointed with the selection (he stressed that there will be lots of Belgian beers). So come by after work, bring friends and we’ll see you there!
Cheers,
